Another day, another !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Well, we threw all our weight to keep Johnson Valley (With uncertain results. The government maintains their "we will do what we want" stance) and it looks like we need to do it again to keep Ocotillo Wells. Environmentalists want to close the open riding section of Ocotillo and turn it into a designated trails only area, ending what brings so much of the allure to the place. To a dirt bike rider, this would be like putting a 15 MPH speed limit on the Nurburgring.

Please help and write to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , even if you have never been there, never plan on going, and never leave the safety of paved roads.

Looks like some angry housewives need to find something else to do with their free time.

Great idea with some closed trails so the habitat can regenerate from the abuse + maintaining and servicing these trials would be easier and cheaper than the whole park. We have the same type of trails here in Denmark for mountainbikers in our national forests, that way we both have fun and enjoy the thriving forest that isn't all shredded by bikes.

The area to the east of Pole Line Road is already "designated trails only." AFAIK, that has stopped exactly 0 people from riding off-trail over there (me included). Unless they ramp up enforcement, the only way to keep people on trails will be to close the whole area (even then, it probably wouldn't work).

What they do now at Ocotillo is fence off areas for habitat reclamation so plants and animals can move back in. Requiring designated trails is mostly useless, since the area is wide open desert so you can't really say that the trail runs only here.

There are areas closed off to riding for habitat rehabilitation. Our national forests are designated trails only, but it's a very different environment than Ocotillo Wells. The whole area is wide open desert, with a thriving desert plants but nobody rides near the plants. If you hit a plant, you will crash, or could break something if you're driving so people don't do it. Plus, the area directly west of Ocotillo is Anza Borrego Desert State Park, a desert preserve. You can ride/drive there, but street legal vehicles only and only on designated trails.

True. But that doesn't mean we stop fighting.

100% agree. There is a lot of potential legislation afoot in Utah right now. Very interesting read. http://www.eenews.net/stories/105998…

Oh no. Anything but oil wells. The tried drilling on Ocotillo a long time ago, but came up dry.
